How To Tune Up Your Car ?

Tune-up service is the most frequently performed compared with other types of car service, such as over-haul, spooring balancing,and repairing body.

Tune up the work should follow the correct sequence of procedures.

Tune up steps:

I. Check the radiator water

Open the radiator cap by way of playing, then see the water in the radiator of the water filling the hole. If the radiator is less amount of water, add to taste with clean water.

The volume of water in the radiator is enough if the height reaches the lower limit of the radiator cap neck.


Do not start the engine in a state of less water in the radiator,because the machine will be very hot.


Time to check the water radiator, also check the water quality. I the water is dirty, should be replaced with new ones. If the water is oily, it means that the oil leak into the cooling water system.Check also the possibility of leakage of cooling water to see whether there is water seepage out of the radiator.


II. Check The Oil Engine

Checking the engine oil, engine oil affects the sound of the engine. if the engine oil is very dirty, watery, or less, the engine will be rough. This will affect the rotation stationary and idle.
Examination of the engine oil and oil conditions. Oil volume  must fulfill the minimum specified. If the engine oil is less, add the oil viscosity equal. Preferably, the oil is added the same brand to avoid chemical reactions that can harm working conditions and the engine.

There are two kinds of lubricating oil:

1. Mineral oil is made from crude oil-containing hydrocarbon material and paraffin hydrocarbons.

2. Synthetic oil a result of chemical compounds, synthetic oil is better than mineral oils because of its higher temperature.


III.Check Visual of Engine before doing Tune Up Process



Visual checks prior to engine start, this is to prevent the damage before the tune up done, do a check as follows:

+ There is no wiring involved
+ no spark plug wires are not attached
+ cabling in accordance with the spark plug ignition sequence
+ does not have any equipment that is located above the engine
+ bolts and nuts installed properly
+ there is no leakage of gasoline on the engine
+ there are no wires short circuiting
+ engine oil and radiator water sufficient



a.Noise caused by the presence of two components of the engine knocking loud enough, usually occurs in the area:
+ Valve gap that is too large
+ loose crankshaft bearings
+ pen loose piston
+ piston loose
+ As loose

b.electrical spark jumps caused by leakage current or short circuit

c.gas pressure because of poor insulation can cause hissing sound

d.normal engine vibration will be smoother, vibration machine that normally does not cause the car body vibrates, if the vibration of the car roughly means that there are disturbances in the process of combustion or other engine components. rough engine vibrations caused by:
+ Is not the same compression pressure between each cylinder.
+ compression pressure above the standard
+ combustion of one cylinder is not normal
+ one dead spark plugs
+ one spark plug wire off
+ cabling spark ignition sequence does not match
+ components that are loose or a loose bolt

e.exhaust fumes

exhaust smoke is an indication whether or not the fuelcombustion process engine

1. color black smoke
black smoke in diesel engines is something that is reasonable,the color of black smoke on the gasoline engine is a sign of incomplete combustion due to the excess gasoline in the mixture of gas and gasoline.

2. The color of white smoke

normal two-stroke engine smoke is white, while the four-stroke engine smoke if white means there is interference, the white color is caused by smoke from burning oil. In a two stroke engine oil is burned along with gasoline, on a four stroke engine oil does not burn, unless there is leakage of oil from the crankcase to the combustion chamber.

3. Smoke colorless

Smoke a good four stroke engine is a colorless, it indicates normal gas mixture, no excess gasoline, not mixed with oil, and no shortage of gasoline.

4. Sooty exhaust smoke

The content of kerosene in petrol in two stroke engines and four stroke engines can cause the appearance of soot in the smoke machine. The sound of the engine definitely rough and electrode spark plugs will be black.



IV.Car Tune Up work order

a. Check The Air Filter
cleaned or replaced the air filter, air filter affects the formation of a mixture of air and gasoline in the intake manifold channel(channel gas revenues)

b.Check The Platinum

located inside the distributor of platinum, platinum should be in service prior to ignition and adjustable when stationary lap, after platinum cleaned and mounted the ignition will change, because the ignition is influenced by the size of the gap platinum.

c.Check The Spark Plugs

check the spark plug wires and spark plugs, replace worn spark plug wires, spark plug wires can cause the cross fire cracked the induction of an adjacent spark plug wires that can cause rough engine noise and engine power is low.

d. Check The Distributor Cap

A good distributor cap:
+ no crack
+ charcoal on the distributor cap that serves high-voltage power drain does not wear out
+ can close properly

anyone have a distributor cap model with vents, for the evaporation of water trapped inside the distributor

distributor cap without ventilation can lead to trapped moisture in the distributor which over time will cause the platinum immersed in water and interfere with ignition wires so that a short circuit occurs that causes the spark plugs did not catapult so that the engine died.

e. Check The Accu/Battery

Accu water level between the upper line, upper level and lower boundary lines, low level, so current that it generates sufficient electric cars. If the water accu less, add up to a limit upper level.
There is also a dry batteries, are expensive and easier maintenance.

clean the poles of the batteries of the fungus and rust with warm water, while the rust that contaminates the poles of the batteries cleaned with sandpaper.

f. Check The Spark Plugs

spark plugs checked after compression pressure measurement or before setting the slit valve.Because at the time of measurement compression,spark plugs should be removed because the hole used to insert the end of the compression pressure gauge, the slit valve adjustments, spark plugs should be in a state is not attached to a light machine when played.

Part spark plugs should be checked is the cleanliness of the electrode and the electrode gap.Electrodes are dirty should be sanded with sandpaper iron and the positive electrode and negative electrode should not be connected.Because it must be adjusted gap, the presence of impurities in the two electrode spark plugs can cause obstruction of the road electric spark jumps.


Once cleaned using sandpaper, on the electrodespark plugs, note the following:

- If there is colored somewhat blue circle between the center electrode with insulatornya, means the type of spark plugs that are used suited.

- If insulatornya quite black and blue electrode,means the type of spark plugs are too cold.

- If insulatornya white and erosion occur at the electrodes, means the type of spark plugs are too hot.


- There are three types of spark plugs, hot, medium,and cold, hot type spark plugs are less resistant to heat, cold type resistant to heat.

- Spark plug heat type suitable for long trips.


g. Set The Valve Gap

after service is complete spark plug, proceed by setting the slit valve, allow the engine without a spark plug to the valve adjustment is completed, with the engine without spark plugs will:

- Played when looking for a lighter compression topposition of each cylinder.
- Ease in checking the position of the piston, whichhas reached its peak or not.
- More secure, because the engine might not rotate(live) without spark plugs.

Terms valve adjustment:

- Adjustment made ​​when the valve closes tightly.
- Tuning is done when most of the slit valve
- Setting the valve can work well if the engine (pistonup and down motion) in accordance with the valves.

How to setup:

- By turning the crank shaft (pulley) to make the piston is at the top of each cylinder compression. This method requires a lot of manpower and time,because they have to rotate pulleys according to the number of cylinders to obtain the position of the piston at the top cylinder 1,2,3,4, and so on. at the topof compression, both IN and EX valves must be in a state close tightly, so that the adjustable gap
- By rotating the crankshaft (pulley), to make thepiston at the top position of the cylinder 1 andcylinder compression as needed, in accordance with the process of working machines. this work requires knowledge of the ignition sequence relationship(FOR = firing order) and valve adjustment.


h. Check The Positive Crank Case Ventilation (PCV)

PCV is a crank chamber ventilation system, gasolinevapor that leaks into the crank chamber flows back into the engine combustion chamber through a hosethat connects the crank chamber to the intakemanifold.

After adjustment valve, PCV should be serviced first before test.PCV compression has little effect on the compression pressure and engine speed. WithoutPCV, lower engine speed than when PCV is enabled.


In the PCV service, which needs to be examined is the PCV valve and hose density. PCV valve that has been damaged should be replaced with new ones.


i.Check when ignition
the principle of adjustment when the ignition is turneddistributor in the state machine lives up to obtain the most refined engine sound with the greatest power.


j. Check idle

set idle in principle is a set mixture of air with gasoline in theidling rotation. So before setting the idle mixture, the engine mustspin on a stationary condition. If after adjusting the idle, the engine turns changing stationary, stationary rotation must be reset.

k.Check Fan Belt

fan belt tension effect on the cooling and spin the alternator, if thefan belt slack, engine cooling fan can not play properly due to slip.
As a result, the cooling fan does not fit with engine rpm so the engine gets hot, but it also can not spin the alternator chargingthe battery so that the maximum is less good.

l. After the tune up process is complete check that all components of the machine, if installed in place, recheck again, if it is, turn the machine on a stationary cycle a few minutes, listen for enginenoise, vibration, exhaust fumes, if all is normal, raising the engine speed slowly as he noticed the engine noise, vibration, smokeexhaust, if it is convinced there are no disturbances orabnormalities of the engine, means tune-up has been completed.
